MGMT promoter methylation
Also written as MGMT methylated, MGMT unmethylated, MGMT promoter methylation, MGMT status
What it means
MGMT is a protein that can repair DNA damage caused by chemotherapy. In some brain tumour cells the MGMT gene is turned off by methylation (a DNA change). If it is turned off, chemotherapy is more likely to work well.
Why it matters
A methylated result may mean temozolomide is more likely to help. An unmethylated one may mean less benefit. Your oncologist decides.
Ask your oncologist
"Is my MGMT result methylated, and how does it shape the chemotherapy decision?"
From Cancer Research UK: Glioblastoma. Not medical advice: your oncologist decides.
