BRAF V600E mutation

Also written as BRAF mutation, BRAF V600, BRAF V600E, BRAF positive

What it means

BRAF V600E is a change in the BRAF gene that makes an abnormal BRAF protein, leading to uncontrolled cell growth. It is most commonly found in melanoma but also in some other cancers. V600E is the most common form.

Why it matters

Drugs that target this mutant protein may kill cancer cells or stop them from growing. Checking for the mutation may help plan treatment. Your oncologist decides.

Ask your oncologist

"Does my BRAF V600E result change my treatment options?"

From NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms: BRAF V600 mutation. Not medical advice: your oncologist decides.
