Gene and marker tests

ALK rearrangement

Also written as ALK positive, ALK fusion, ALK gene rearrangement, EML4-ALK, ALK IHC positive

What it means

ALK is a gene that makes a protein involved in cell growth. Changed forms of the ALK gene and protein have been found in some cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer. These changes may increase the growth of cancer cells.

Why it matters

Checking for changes in the ALK gene in tumour tissue may help plan treatment. Your oncologist decides.

Ask your oncologist

"My report shows an ALK change. What targeted options does that open up?"

From NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms: ALK gene. Not medical advice: your oncologist decides.
