Breast cancer markers
HER2 IHC 2+ (equivocal)
Also written as HER2 2+, IHC 2+, HER2 equivocal, HER2 borderline
What it means
On the HER2 stain test, 2+ means more than 10% of cells had darker or more complete staining than 1+ but not as strong as 3+. A 2+ result is usually followed by a FISH test to settle whether the cancer is HER2 positive.
Why it matters
With 2+, FISH decides: 2+ with positive FISH is HER2 positive, and 2+ with negative FISH is called HER2 low. Your oncologist explains what follows.
Ask your oncologist
"My HER2 is 2+. Has FISH been done, and what did it show?"
From American Cancer Society: Breast Cancer HER2 Status. Not medical advice: your oncologist decides.
