Retlirafusp alfa combo extended survival in advanced stomach cancer

The 6 cancer-care developments that matter from the last 36 hours, strongest evidence first.

  1. Retlirafusp alfa combo extended survival in advanced stomach cancer
  2. Shorter radiation had similar safety after breast cancer mastectomy
  3. Ovarian cancer researcher named Wistar Institute president
  4. Blood-based model better predicted lung cancer risk in smokers
  5. More responsive T cells controlled melanoma tumors in mice
  6. Recent phase I trials showed longer survival for gynecologic cancer patients
Phase III trial · stomach cancer

Retlirafusp alfa combo extended survival in advanced stomach cancer

In a trial of 731 people with untreated advanced stomach cancer, adding retlirafusp alfa to capecitabine and oxaliplatin led to a median survival of 15.8 months, compared with 11.2 months with chemotherapy alone.

What this means. A large, final-stage trial in stomach cancer. This is the kind of result regulators use when deciding whether to approve a treatment.

Research · breast cancer

Shorter radiation had similar safety after breast cancer mastectomy

In a randomized trial of women with breast cancer having reconstruction after mastectomy, 16 radiation treatments had similar complication rates to 25: 12.3% versus 10.2% at 24 months.

“A 16-fraction course of hypofractionated PMRT is safe and noninferior to conventional PMRT in women undergoing breast reconstruction after mastectomy.”

What this means. A trial in breast cancer that split people into groups at random, the fairest kind of test.

Research · ovarian cancer

Ovarian cancer researcher named Wistar Institute president

The Wistar Institute appointed Ronny Drapkin, an ovarian cancer researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, as its next president and chief executive officer, starting November 30, 2026. His research focuses on high-grade ovarian cancer and its earliest development.

“As Wistar President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Drapkin will lead the Institute’s early-stage discovery research in cancer, immunology and infectious disease; strengthen and expand its workforce education and training programs; and broaden support for Wistar’s scientific mission and future growth by working closely with donors, trustees, corporate and academic partners, and policymakers.”

What this means. Based on data or samples from people with ovarian cancer. It is not a treatment trial.

Blood-based model better predicted lung cancer risk in smokers

Researchers developed a blood-based model using data from smokers and tested it in 3,195 others. At the same rate of false alarms, it found 57.6% of lung cancers in women, compared with 39.2% for an existing model.

“After inclusion of blood test information, the CPH-Lung model was more sensitive in the Danish population than PLCOm2012 for prediction of 6-year lung cancer risk particularly among women and younger individuals.”

What this means. Based on data or samples from people with lung cancer. It is not a treatment trial.

More responsive T cells controlled melanoma tumors in mice

Researchers compared modified T cells that responded more or less strongly to the same melanoma marker. Only the more responsive cells caused lasting tumor shrinkage in mice.

“Together, these findings identify host cell antigen recognition as a sensitivity (how often the test finds cancer that is there)-dependent functional correlate of TCR-T cell effectiveness and provide a mechanistic explanation for the superior activity of higher-sensitivity TCRs in solid tumors.”

What this means. Lab or animal research on several cancer types. Not yet tested as a treatment in people; many lab results never reach patients.

Phase I trial

Recent phase I trials showed longer survival for gynecologic cancer patients

A study of patients with advanced gynecologic cancers in phase I trials found median survival was 2.17 years for those enrolled from 2015 to 2022.

“Phase I clinical trial participation in gynecologic cancers may provide clinically meaningful benefits, favorable toxicity profiles, and improved median OS over time.”

What this means. An early trial in cancer, mainly testing safety and dose. Any new treatment here is years away from routine use.
