Anito-cel led to responses in multiple myeloma trial

In a phase I study, all 38 treated people with heavily pretreated multiple myeloma responded to anito-cel, and 79% had a complete response.

What this means. A mid-stage trial in myeloma, a blood cancer. Good results at this stage usually still need a larger trial before approval.

Financial support did not ease hardship for most people with advanced cancer

In a trial of 329 people with advanced cancer, six months of financial navigation did not significantly reduce hardship: 47% faced hardship, compared with 50% who received educational videos. The support may help people with existing financial and social resources.

“Results from the randomized nationwide CREDIT trial showed that a financial navigation support program does not broadly reduce financial hardship for people being treated for advanced cancer.”

What this means. A trial in cancer that split people into groups at random, the fairest kind of test.

Massage and acupuncture eased pain in people with advanced cancer

In a 26-week trial of people with advanced cancer, worst pain scores fell by 2.53 points with acupuncture and 3.01 points with massage on a 10-point scale. The trial did not report results specifically for liver cancer.

What this means. A trial in liver cancer that split people into groups at random, the fairest kind of test.

Remote exercise improved quality of life for people with liver cancer

In a phase II trial, people with cancer receiving immunotherapy took part in a 12-week remote exercise program or received usual care. Quality of life improved for 75.8% in the exercise group, compared with 6.3% in usual care.

“The weekly check-ins also provided both support and flexibility for the participants.”

What this means. A mid-stage trial in liver cancer. Good results at this stage usually still need a larger trial before approval.

Breast cancer metastases often gain mutations after spreading

Researchers analyzed tumor data from 662 paired samples and about 6,000 unpaired samples from people with breast cancer. They found that 95% of patients had metastasis-specific mutations in at least 10 pathways, and mutation timing explained more than half the variation in time to recurrence.

“These analyses indicate that metastasis-specific mutations are frequently acquired post-dissemination, with a disproportionate contribution from APOBEC-mediated mutagenesis.”

What this means. Based on data or samples from people with breast cancer. It is not a treatment trial.

Researchers create a mouse model of human glioblastoma

Researchers developed a mouse model that matched key features of patient glioblastoma, including its spread through brain tissue and weak immune response. The tumors resisted immune checkpoint treatment in mice.

“In sum, these findings demonstrate the improved fidelity of the mEGFRvIII-PC model to patient tumors and support its use in developing and refining novel therapeutic paradigms for GBM.”

What this means. Lab or animal research on brain cancer. Not yet tested as a treatment in people; many lab results never reach patients.
