On a biopsy report
Nottingham grade (breast)
Also written as Nottingham histologic grade, Modified Bloom Richardson grade, Grade 1, 2 or 3 breast cancer, SBR grade
What it means
For breast cancer, the pathologist adds up three scores to give a grade from 1 to 3. Grade 1 cells look most like normal breast cells and tend to grow slowly. Grade 3 cells look very different and tend to grow and spread faster.
Why it matters
Grade is one of the results your oncologist uses to choose treatment. A higher grade does not decide the plan on its own.
Ask your oncologist
"Which grade is my breast cancer, and which results sit alongside it?"
From Cancer Research UK: Stages and grades of breast cancer and UK breast screening programme: Breast Cancer Grading Nottingham Criteria (GOV.UK). Not medical advice: your oncologist decides.
