On a biopsy report

Immunohistochemistry (IHC)

Also written as IHC, Immunostaining, IHC markers

What it means

IHC is a laboratory test that uses antibodies to check for certain markers in a tissue sample. The markers show up under a microscope. It helps diagnose cancer and can help tell different types of cancer apart.

Why it matters

IHC results such as ER, PR and HER2 can help your oncologist choose among treatments.

Ask your oncologist

"Which IHC markers were tested on my sample, and what did each one show?"

From NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms: immunohistochemistry. Not medical advice: your oncologist decides.
