On a biopsy report

Carcinoma in situ

Also written as CIS, Stage 0, In situ carcinoma

What it means

Carcinoma in situ means abnormal cells that look like cancer cells are found only where they first formed and have not spread to nearby tissue. At some point, these cells may become cancerous and spread. It is also called stage 0 disease.

Why it matters

It is an early finding. Your doctor will explain whether treatment or watching is the better route for your case.

Ask your oncologist

"What is the plan for carcinoma in situ in my case?"

From NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms: carcinoma in situ. Not medical advice: your oncologist decides.
