  3. Financial incentives helped people referred for lung cancer screening quit smoking
  4. Study links blinatumomab benefit to subtypes of adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia
  5. Continuous BTK inhibitors kept chronic lymphocytic leukemia in check for about 7 years
  6. Blocking a nutrient transporter helped immunotherapy fight glioblastoma in mice

FDA approves daraxonrasib for pancreatic cancer

In adults with advanced pancreatic cancer, daraxonrasib nearly doubled how long people lived compared with standard chemotherapy: 13.2 months versus 6.7 months.

“In addition to directly destroying cancer cells, the combination treatment may help stimulate the immune system to mount an attack against the tumor.”

What this means. A mid-stage trial in several cancer types. Good results at this stage usually still need a larger trial before approval.

Drug combination helped older patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma

In a trial of 101 older or medically unfit people with untreated diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, mosunetuzumab plus polatuzumab vedotin led to tumor shrinkage or disappearance in 61.4% of patients.

“This geriatric assessment-guided treatment demonstrated durable effectiveness and may represent a potential first-line (the first treatment given) treatment option for carefully selected unfit or frail patients with newly diagnosed DLBCL.”

What this means. An early trial in lymphoma, a blood cancer, mainly testing safety and dose. Any new treatment here is years away from routine use.

Financial incentives helped people referred for lung cancer screening quit smoking

In a trial of underserved adults referred for lung cancer screening, 8.8% quit smoking for six months with financial incentives, compared with 4.3% receiving usual care.

What this means. A trial in lung cancer that split people into groups at random, the fairest kind of test.

Research · acute lymphoblastic leukaemia

Study links blinatumomab benefit to subtypes of adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia

Researchers analyzed data from 569 adults with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Adding blinatumomab to chemotherapy was linked to more time before relapse and longer lives in several subtypes, but some groups were small and need confirmation.

“Integration of genomic and clinical data suggested that the addition of blinatumomab to chemotherapy was associated with improved relapse-free and overall survival for several B-ALL subtypes, including hyperdiploid, PAX5alt, PAX5 P80R, BCR::ABL1-like JAK-STAT and KMT2A-R B-ALL, although small sample sizes for several subtypes indicate that confirmation is required.”

What this means. Based on data or samples from people with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a blood cancer. It is not a treatment trial.

Continuous BTK inhibitors kept chronic lymphocytic leukemia in check for about 7 years

Studies of people with chronic lymphocytic leukemia with TP53 loss found that continuous BTK inhibitor treatment kept the cancer from growing for a median of approximately 7 years. Fixed-duration treatments had shorter times before the cancer grew.

“Although early data from fixed-duration regimen studies indicate that most patients respond to retreatment, specific data for the TP53-LoF subset have not been reported.”

What this means. Based on data or samples from people with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, a blood cancer. It is not a treatment trial.

Blocking a nutrient transporter helped immunotherapy fight glioblastoma in mice

The transporter was more active in human glioblastoma samples than in normal brain tissue. In mice, a drug-like molecule blocking it helped checkpoint immunotherapy control brain tumors.

What this means. Lab or animal research on brain cancer. Not yet tested as a treatment in people; many lab results never reach patients.

Cabozantinib led to responses in pretreated non-small cell lung cancer

In a phase II trial, 7 people with previously treated ROS1 fusion-positive non-small cell lung cancer received cabozantinib; 43% had tumors shrink.

“Cabozantinib achieved responses in pre-treated ROS1 fusion-positive NSCLCs, even in the presence of multi-drug-resistant mutations, highlighting the potential utility of type II ROS1 TKI therapy.”

What this means. A mid-stage trial in lung cancer. Good results at this stage usually still need a larger trial before approval.
