A mutation linked to cisplatin resistance in hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma

The 2 cancer-care developments that matter from the last 3 days, strongest evidence first.

A mutation linked to cisplatin resistance in hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma

Researchers analyzed tissue from nine people with hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma; six had new mutations when their cancer progressed. Lab and tumor model tests found one mutation promoted cisplatin resistance.

“Our study identifies ENPP1 mutation as one of the key genetic drivers of recurrence, mediating both chemotherapy resistance and immunomodulation.”

What this means. Lab or animal research on cancer. Not yet tested as a treatment in people; many lab results never reach patients.

Study finds protein-form switches in acute myeloid leukemia

Researchers compared cancer and normal tissue samples, including from people with acute myeloid leukemia, and found changes in the most common protein forms. They verified 12.1% of the identified changes using protein data.

“This study identifies cMDTs that may serve as candidate biomarkers in melanoma, ovarian cancer, and acute myeloid leukaemia, with the potential to improve cancer diagnosis and support clinical decision-making.”

What this means. Based on data or samples from people with acute myeloid leukaemia, a blood cancer. It is not a treatment trial.
