Blood markers
PSA (prostate-specific antigen)
Also written as PSA, PSA level, Total PSA, Free PSA
What it means
PSA is a protein made by the prostate gland and found in the blood. Blood levels may be higher than normal in men with prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, a non-cancer enlargement), or infection or inflammation of the prostate.
Why it matters
A raised PSA alone does not prove cancer. Your doctor reads it together with other tests.
Ask your oncologist
"What could be causing my PSA level, and what test comes next?"
From NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms: prostate-specific antigen. Not medical advice: your oncologist decides.
