Prostate cancer
Gleason score
Also written as Gleason, Gleason 3+4, Gleason 4+3, Gleason 7, Gleason 6, Gleason 8
What it means
The Gleason score describes prostate cancer by how abnormal the cells in a biopsy look and how quickly they are likely to grow and spread. It usually ranges from 6 to 10. The lower the score, the more the cells look like normal cells and the slower they are likely to grow.
Why it matters
It helps plan treatment and judge the outlook. Your oncologist reads it with PSA and stage.
Ask your oncologist
"What is my Gleason score and Grade Group, and how do they shape my options?"
From NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms: Gleason score. Not medical advice: your oncologist decides.
