Adjuvant therapy

Also written as Adjuvant chemotherapy, Adjuvant radiotherapy, Adjuvant, Adjuvant treatment

What it means

Adjuvant therapy is extra cancer treatment given after the main treatment to lower the risk that the cancer will come back. It may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy or biological therapy.

Why it matters

It aims to lower the chance of the cancer returning. Your oncologist decides which one, if any, fits you.

Ask your oncologist

"Do I need adjuvant therapy after my surgery, and which kind?"

From NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms: adjuvant therapy. Not medical advice: your oncologist decides.
